PAGASA'S ASSESSMENT OF BBM ADMINISTRATION AFTER YEAR 1

In the morning of 22 July 2023, PAGASA's STC guested on the "reincarnated" Teleradyo Serbisyo program of Alvin Elchico called "Wais Konsyumer." Mr. Elchico asked for PAGASA's assessment of the over-all performance of BBM's Administration amidst continuous worries over inflation, new taxes, the Maharlika Fund and business/consumer confidence.

 
CO-ORGANIZERS MEET FOR AGRILINK

On 13 July, FRLD held its 2nd Meeting for 2023 for Co-Organizers (made up of supportive Assns like PAGASA) at Victorino's Restaurant. FRLD is the organizer of Agrilink, Foodlink, Aqualink> the biggest Agri-Business Tradeshow in the land. Chairman for this year is Region 1 Agri-Sector. Show is at the World Trade Center early this October. PAGASA served as Chairman of this Tradeshow back in 2007. Standing in black jacket is FRLD Pres. PAGASA IS INTRODUCED TO SCHOLARS OF SUSTENANCE (SOS)

STC was introduced on the afternoon of 4 July 2023 by QC Cityhall's Co-Chairman for Food Security Task Force (via Zoom) to Patricia Nuon of the Scholars of Sustenance (SOS Phils.). SOS is an international food rescue NGO which is QC's partner for the objective of gathering excess food for distribution to the hungry sectors of society.

PAGASA represents the Food Retailing sector of the Phil. Retailers Assn. (PRA). The Assn. PAGASA is an Associate Member of the PRA. PAGASA is represented by its President Steven T. Cua at PRA activities. On 27 June 2023, PRA held its 2/Q General Membership Meeting-cum-Elections at the newly-constructed Westin Manila Sonata Residences at the Ortigas Center. FAKE PWD CARDS FOR SALE

STC was interviewed by Julius Babao & Tintin Bersola over One.Ph in the afternoon of 26 June 2023 on the topic of fake Persons With Disability (PWD) Cards as an online syndicate was recently apprehended offering PWD Cards for a fee. Those selling the same at Recto Avenue, Manila were also discussed.

 
PAGASA'S COMMENTS ON INITIATING TAX ON SALTED FOODS AND ADDITIONAL TAXES ON SWEETENED BEVERAGES

On the same morning of 24 June 2023, PAGASA's STC guested online over Teleradyo's "Bida Konsyumer" program hosted by Alvin Elchico and DZRH by commentator Henry Uri regarding proposal by DOF to increase taxes on sweetened beverages & introduce taxes on salted foods. Regarding the potential passing of this Bill into law, STC mentioned the potential drop in employment of concerned manufacturers as a minus factor, lack of options for the daily wage earner when it comes to snacking (alternatives are bananaque, kwek kwek, isaw isaw, IUD and other street food) and stressed on the need for authorities to focus on information dissemination to the public regarding balanced diet & disciplined food intake. PAGASA Director Robert Go/Prince Retail Group was also interviewed by the press in the Visayas region about this ill-timed Bill.

PROHIBITION OF INDUSTRIAL TRANS FAT IN PRODUCTS SOLD IN THE PHILS.

 In the morning of 22 June 2023, PAGASA's STC was interviewed by Ali Sotto & Pat Daza of Net25 regarding FDA Administrative Order prohibiting the manufacture, distribution & sale of products containing industrial trans fat beginning Monday (6/19/23) this week. Retailers were not properly informed regarding this Order.

At the Opening Ceremonies of Manila Food & Beverage Exhibitions on 14 June 2023 at the World Trade Center, PAGASA was invited to grace the Event. Keynote Guest was Madame Senator Cynthia A. Villar. Also in attendance was Pasay City Mayor Imelda G. Calixto-Rubiano (in pink) with her City Administrator.

PAGASA has been a Partner Association of MAFBEX since its second year in tge Expo business. Diplomats from Thailand, Cambodia and others filled the Affair. Gentlemen from the Russian delegation (L-R): Mr. Artem Kaloev of the Trade Commission, Mr. Nikolay Ovsyannikov/Economic Counselor of the Embassy of the Russian Federation and Mr. Artyom N. Tsinamdzgvrishvili/Trade Commissioner of the Head of the Economic Mission of the Trade Representation (much like DTI) of the Russian Federation in the Rep.of the Phils. joined in at a photo-op. The 1st & last gentlemen are here for the last two months to establish economic ties with Filipino businessmen on top of the work of the Economic Counselor. They were interested to meet with PAGASA Members.

RETAILER FOR THE YEARS 2020-22

On the eve of 8 June 2023, Pres. Steven T. Cua represented PAGASA at PRA's event "Retailer of the Year Awards" Night at the Okada Grand Ballroom. Award for Retailer for the Years 2020-22 goes to Sec. Jose Ma. Concepcion for his involvement in the program Go Negosyo in keeping MSMEs alive during the course of the 3-year pandemic. Sustainability, creativity and resiliency pervaded the air that evening. The big winners were McDonald's, Penshoppe & Bayo.

TAIWANESE RESEARCHERS STUDY THE PHIL. FOOD RETAIL INDUSTRY

PAGASA's STC was interviewed online on 1 June 2023 by Dr. Elaine Borazon & Research Asst. Maria Rica Sidney Magracia of the National Sun Yat-Sen University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. They were interviewing key retailers in the country and working on a Study entitled "Policy Analysis of the Current Governance of Food Retail in the Phils." Mr. Cua cited the lack of continuity of government plans and programs as the major obstacle hindering the development of food that is both healthy and nutritious.
